They resent us because we have freedom of religion, give women equal rights and many other reasons that have little to do with our recent government policy. Islamic extremism is caused by a perversion of the Islamic faith.

None of the previous answers are correct or even close to truth. Extremists have decided to take the extreme of every opinion because they simply wanted to gain political benefits. Example: When they attacked us on 9-11 they wanted to revenge for what our government has been doing of support to their best nemesis (Israel) and they thought that taking this way they will get a message across to the world of "we are alive and we can fight back". Studying early Islamic history (which is Al Qaeda's third reference if not the second) tells you that they never attacked innocents but soldiers and armies, though the new groups of Jihadyeen believe it is their right to use whatever in order to achieve their goals!! Basically I can tell you that they have used their holy book and history from the extreme point of view trying to resolve their global-political problems. There is so many verses in their book that could be interpreted to something Violante but it's exactly like any other holy book, interpretation and explanation may vary from one person to another depending on how they believe. They chose to be extremest not because they were told by a book! Most of people got their answers either from media or hearing other people talking! I have studied their culture and I know what I'm talking about it angers me how people sometimes act like parrots and repeat what others says!

They are operating under their own agendas without regard for the teachings of the Islamic faith, and are twisting the words of the Qur'an to suit their own needs.
