I have a Compaq Presario V2220US that I've had for 2 years. I love it, and my life is essentially on this laptop. I do not want a new laptop for hopefully a year... mostly because I want to wait a while before getting Vista, etc... so, the battery died a while back...it stopped holding a charge completely about 6 months ago so I have had a wonderful stationary laptop since then. For a short time, without a battery, my computer would shock me if I touched it...but we made it through with a little understanding. Now, while scouring e-bay I've found a reasonably priced battery and AC adapter for my computer...a better MUCH price than the $250+ if I were to get them through HP...however I don't know if I should go for it or not. I know I'd need a battery...but should I get both...or just continue one with my own personal stationary laptop? I guess I'm worried that I will get a new battery and my old ac adapter will ruin it, or I'll get an adapter I don't need...is there anyway to test it??

The Computer was the source of the shock...which stopped as quickly as it started and hasn't happened in MONTHS...which is why I'm wondering if there is a way to test the ac adapter...

The ac adapter, when properly working, will provide a DC voltage to the plug that goes into the pc. If you look at your power supply it will tell you the DC voltage you should be seeing.

You need a volt meter. Set the volt meter to DC voltage in the DC voltage range the power supply states it is supposed to deliver.

Plug in the power supply to the 120 V ac outlet but not into the pc.

Connect the volt meter leads to the DC side of the power supply and measure the voltage. If you measure the voltage in the range it should be at, the power supply is probably good and the battery is probably bad.

You can try to charge the battery for about 2 hours and then check the power supply again to see if it provides voltage because sometimes power supplies heat up and fail after charging for a while.

If you do not know how to use a volt meter, or do not have one, or are uncomfortable doing this, I suggest you get assistance from someone who knows how to do it. The voltage is not lethal but if you are not sufficiently comfortable doing this or feel totally lost, get assistance.

My personal guess is that the battery is the problem but both could go bad. I have NO DATA to positively state the power supply is good and without a test, no one else does either.

I am concerned about the shock however. Usually power supplies are encased in insulated housing so shocks don't happen. If there are any housing or wire insulation breaks or gaps you have a safety problem - and you should repair or replace the unit. Replacement is probably better than repair.

if you are getting a shock from the laptop it is strange have it checked as the laptop is plastic but you should only need the bat as the laptop is running from the adaptor it will charge it ok
