At one time all of humankind were polytheists. The earliest religion is animism and everything from stones, to lightening, to bodies of water had spirits to be worshiped and propitiated.

It is true that most people at that time period were.. But the Hebrews tribes, did not really exist as a unit of people until God, came to Abraham, And stated that your descended will number like the stars and the grains of sand..............................

if you like "historical" fiction, may i recommend "the red tent" by anita diamont? she did a lot of research into that area before writing this book, and most of what she has in there is as accurate as we can possibly uncover.
