Dodge City, Kansas
Circa 1876

TO RECAP THE LAST STORY:

Sunshine's one time boyfriend from her hometown in Virginia, Kevin Dunbar, has come to Dodge. Recently widowed, he had sent a letter to Sunshine....She immediately went to visit him, in hopes of being a good, compassionate friend to lean on. Kevin felt more than mere gratitude for her attentions. His long ago love for her was rekindled. He has arrived in Dodge in the hopes of convincing her that HE is her one true love and NOT Marshal Matt Dillon.
The three of them had met up at a dance .Sunshine was asked to perform. She strapped on a guitar and sang a new love song that she had written for Matt.

While she was still singing, Kevin started to leave. He walked over to Matt........"I'm not a man who gives up easily."
Matt:" I'm not a man who speaks for my woman. She speaks for herself. Listen to what she's saying, Kevin."
Kevin :" It ain't over, Dillon....not by a long shot."

AND NOW WE RESUME:
"Kevin Dunbar"
Subtitle...."Time Stands Still"

When Sunshine had finished singing she rejoined Matt.
Sunshine:"Did you like my song, baby?"
Matt:" I like everything about you, SunnyMac." He kissed her.
Festus had been watching all the goings on......."'Pears to me that everything is the way it's suppose to be, now. That (2.)Fly By Night pretty feller is gone and Matthew and Miss Sunshine
are a huggin' on each other."
Doc:"Festus, if I am correct, and I usually am, you know, it is NOT over.......It's just begun!"

It was at this moment that Miss Kitty Russell came staggering in! Having lost Matt to Sunshine MacGillicutty, she had taken to the bottle....Randy Scouse Git Rotgut, to be exact.
Kitty stumbles on the bandstand......"(1.) All The Worlds A Stage .......And now I shall recite my latest poem for everyone:

"Roses are red. Roses are pink. When you left me I had time to think." She glared at Matt.
"You did me no good. You did only bad. Now I'm just a drunk.
Quite lonely.....hic!.....and quite sad."

Doc and Festus helped her off the stage and back to her room.

Matt and Sunshine bid everyone adieu and headed back to her farm.
Matt, to the horse...."Come on (3.) Tom Sawyer, take us home, boy."
Sunshine:"Where did Kevin go?"
Matt: " Hopefully to hell........probably to the Dodge House.
The nerve of the guy!!! Who does he think he is?!"
Sunshine:"It's okay, Matt. His life has been turned upside down." After a minute of silence....."Matt, there's something I need to tell you." Matt stopped the buckboard to look at her.
He was worried what she was going to say:

Sunshine:"Matt.....Kevin and I had a relationship, before my marriage. We eventually broke up....I married John and not long after that was when he married Isabell."
Matt : "Whew!! I thought you were going to tell me that you still had feelings for him...........Which you don't.....right?"
Sunshine:" Baby if the love you and I share gets any (5.) Closer To The Heart it's going to cause a cardiac arrest!!"

They were still laughing when they pulled up in front of the farmhouse. There stood Kevin on the front porch:

Matt:"What the hell are you doing here?!"
Kevin: "I was just about to ask the same of you, Marshal. Actually, now that you got Sunshine home safely, you can just go on. She and I have some things to talk over."
Matt:" Mister........I live here."

Kevin looked at Sunshine and then back to Matt......"So it's like that, huh?"
Matt:" Yep. It's like that. Listen. I'm going to put the horse and buckboard away. Say your goodbyes. When I get back, I don't want to see you. Understand?!"
After he started walking to the barn, Kevin faced Sunshine........"There are very few times that (4.) Time Stands Still in a man's life.....
This is one of those times. I still love you. It's as though we're back where we started.....We're both single again. We've been given a second chance."

Matt watched them from the barn. He knew he had to let Sunshine speak for herself. The trouble is, she wasn't speaking......She just kept looking at Kevin:

Oh, what a cute little boy is Tom Sawyer! I remember that book very clearly, as if the time stands still. Where are those times, though? They say that all the world is a stage, so…do I have to be an actress? Could I be Becky? Or maybe not. I’d prefer to remain back stage sometimes, like today. It was a bad hair day, today. I wish I could fly by night tonight and get closer to the heart of the forest, where I could have a little bit of peace. Breath in and breath out, it’s all over now. You can smile and choose another character the next time.

ilaida was flying by night to make it in time, though she had no idea what kind of reception she would get at the Circle C Ranch, in North Dakota, a place she had come to affectionately refer to, as "the place where time stands still".

Inspite of the fact that she has always thought that all the world is a stage, this place by the Native American reservations, had a way more theatrical effect on her than the other places she has been to. The river that ran by her grandpa's property and the view beyond it always reminded her of a scene taken right out of a Mark Twain novel, she could almost see Tom Sawyer talking to Huckleberry Finn, cooking up some mischief, while she was sitting on the porch and gazing up to the pastures that lied in front of her for as long as the eye could see.

Before she got off the plane she had made peace within herself and had come to the resolution that whatever the outcome of this reunion might be, she would still accept it gracefully and respond in a diplomatic way. After all, despite her world wide traveling, and the many magical and exotic places she fell in love with, her grandpa's ranch and the town that held her childhood memories, would always be a place closer to the heart for her.

Tom Sawyer wandered down the street, idling pulling a stick along a picket fence, bored and sleepy in the heat of the midday sun. As he neared the end of the property, he saw a flash of ribbons, and for him, time stands still as he spied young Becky Thatcher.
She mounted a small overturned soapbox, opened the book in her hand and solemnly stated, "All the world's a stage and..." Then she gave a small cry as the box tipped beneath her. She tumbled in a flurry of ruffles and petticoats, and Tom flew to her side.
She lay limp and still in his arms. He looked at her freckles, her lashes lying dark against her cheeks, her small curved mouth, and he marveled at how she was made. Her perfume teased him as he gathered her closer to the heart.
He rose, staggering slightly with her weight, and turned toward the house. Just then, a high young voice called, "Tom! She's funnin' you! She ain't hurt!" His best friend, Huck, was leaning on the cornerpost of the fence. "Check her out. She saw that fly by night puppet show--the one we didn't have two cents for. They showed her how to trick a fella."
Tom paused, looking again at that beautiful face. Was there a smile curving those fine lips? A hint of blue eyes peeping from under those lashes? Who doused themselves in that much perfume, anyway? She was lucky the bees didn't carry her off.
He dumped her unceremoniously on her father's porch and ran off, laughing, down the road with Huck.

“Honk! Honk!”

All the worlds a stage... you sure called that one Mr. Shakespeare, I thought as yet another car went by tooting at me. I felt like Tom Sawyer out here painting my fence only I didn’t have anyone to talk into doing it for me. Maybe if I sat on the sidewalk instead of bending over to get the bottom of the planks the car horns would stop? But that would mean I’d have to get up and down all day and I sure wasn’t going to do that so bending and car horns would just have to accompany me as I painted my way across my fence “stage”.

Thinking about painting the fence brought back memories of Jake, my late husband, who used to do this chore. He had been closer to the heart of me than any other person in my life. I remember the night the police came to the door. It’s funny how time stands still when you are in shock. He had business on the west coast and he wanted to fly by night - the redeye - in order to get everything setup in the branch office for the investment meeting. He never made it. A heart attack in the air. They had done everything within their power, but he would have needed immediate surgery to survive. Poor Jake. I will miss him everyday of my life.

But my life was going on and I had to live it. Jake would have wanted me to move on, so here I was sprucing up our house before I put it on the market. I always liked Seattle and a house on Puget Sound would be perfect for me. I could envision myself on the deck of my new home with my laptop hammering out one best seller after another. Yup, the curtain was coming down on this stage of my life, but it was going to be a glorious opening in Seattle!
