What a painful memory this is. I was 12 and we were at a lake near Fort Polk Louisiana...my Dad was Army. It was the 4th of July and there were so many cool water shows going on.....military stuff. It was unbelievable. Well, I played in the water and watched the shows...and swam and ate all day...must have been 10 hours. About 4 hours into it, I was already hurting, but my step mom told me to "go play." So...I tried getting out of the sun. When we left and I got home, I was already having chills. I had a fever of over 102 and was just fried. My dad put me in cool water to pull the heat out and I took aspirin. The next day there were water blisters on my shoulders. It was horrible. I couldn't touch fabric without crying. It was a second degree burn over 30% of my body....tops of my legs were horrible too.that's how the doctor in the ER described it. I protect my children like crazy now and have not had a burn since then. I won't let it happen again.

It took 3 hours in the sun without sunblock (first visit to the beach that year). My shins were burned so badly that huge blisters formed from my ankle almost up to my knee. The blisters were raised about a half inch. My ankles swelled and turned a bit purple and my feet swelled a little too. It was so hard to walk. I bought a huge aloe leaf and squeezed aloe on it all day long. The blisters lasted about a week until I stopped putting the aloe on. They dried up and huge pieces of skin started peeling off. My skin is a slightly different texture there now.

I've had a lot of bad sunburns, but probably the worst was when we were camping in Tahoe. We were out on a boat all day & when we came back to the campsite I could barely move. My arms & back were so bad I tried to lay flat on my sleeping bag & just not move! Everything hurt to touch, even putting on clothes. When we went home I remember putting on that blue aloe gel & laying on the couch watching Harry Potter :) It usually lasts for me for a few days & then I start peeling...fun times :)

Junior year of HS I skipped and went to the beach in late may earlie June thinking I didn't need sun block and I was wrong. The next day I had to take my SAT's and I wonder why I couldn't consintrate on them.
Senior prom weekend did the same thing and while everyone was getting drunk I was passed out because I couldn't move from the pain.

When I was 16 I went to Jamaica. On the last day there, I laid in the sun ALL day without any sunscreen because I wanted to be sure I got very tanned. (I'm Irish - fair skinned & freckled - at the time anyway).
I ended up getting sun poisoning and it was horrible. I was so sick & had the chills. Never ever again, have I gone in the sun without sunscreen.
