I'm finally getting my OWN computer. The rest of the family can't share -- I work 10 -14 hours a day, 5-6 days a week, and when I get home, I want to play and destress, however, since my mother and brother can't find a way to share and get their things done in the 10-14 hours I'm gone (neither one of them work or are going to school), I end up getting 10 minutes at the end of the night and getting booted off because someone NEEDS the computer, or because they take so long to get off the thing, that I have to go to bed, else I be late and or tired the next day at work.
(sorry, had to vent)
SO, finally, I'm buying my own computer within the next week or so. And I want to have internet on it. The family computer has Bellsouth/AT&T DSL.

And I have no phone jack in my room. Only a cable outlet.

So, what would be the best course of action for getting internet in my room? As in, the cheapest and most efficient?

The easiest thing for you to do would be to buy your new computer with a wireless network card in it otherwise you can buy a wireless usb adapter to use here is a decent one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833150021

And you will also need a wireless Router to hook up at the DSL Modem. Here is a good one that matches the wireless usb adapter I gave you:

Good Luck HTH.

Get a wireless DSL router. You can buy a wireless usb adapter at the store where you buy the wireless router. Then you can access the DSL from anywhere in your home as long as you have the wireless adapter attached to the computer. Most wireless routers have regular ports on them as well and will usually support up to 5 connections at the same time.

Get a wireless router and a wireless adapter for your computer. Hook the DSL modem into the router and use the wireless adapter to connect to the router. Also, hook the other computer into the router as well. That way, both computers can be on the Internet at the same time.

If there's still some ethernet ports available at the DSL modem/router at your home, you can span an UTP category 5e cable to your room and connect it to the network card of your PC. It's very cheap but you should do some works to make re-wiring to your room from the router.
Your investment is just an UTP cat-5e cables and that's it. No need to buy wireless router, wireless card, etc.

a wireless router sounds like the ticket.
if it's ok with your parents that is.

the linksys WRT54G is the bad boy of the router set, and it can be found for about 39 to 59 bucks depending on where you buy it.
