Is it true that you actually "buy" land on sceond life with real $?

Yes, but the real money is called lindens (might not be how its spelled). You can "buy" lindens with real-world money and there is a set exchange rate for second life.

Yep, it is true. It's just like buying real estate in the real world...people WILL actually buy it.
