now they are telling me i have to go to work and i can't call in sick. isn't there a law against that or something? i told them im going to get a doctors excuse. but, they told me if i can't find someone to cover my shift then i can't call in sick. there are only 2 people who could cover me and both of them said no. so yeah, isn't that illegal. im sick as hell!

They can't MAKE you work. But be sure you get a doctor's note so when they fire you, you have a legitimate case to take action against them.

It isn't illegal. When someone calls off, she's trying to find someone to fill in for them, which is part of her job. No it isn't harassment. Not sure why she'd go to the trouble to drive by your and other people's homes. I'm guessing you don't answer the phone when she calls, so she can't get in touch with you any other way. Just how often are these calloffs? You say she does it to your whole department, not just to you, and that you "don't want to come in early all the time"? Are you exaggerating maybe, just a little bit? Let's see, 8 people, maybe 5 calloffs each per year? Total of less than one a week? And if she's spreading things fairly evenly on who she tries to track down, that would just be once every couple months. If you each have lots more calloffs than that, then sounds like the people in the department are more of a problem than the supervisor. If you don't want to be asked to come in early to work when they need you, your option is to look for another job. They'd probably be able to find someone else who might be glad to have the hours.

Most companies give you a certain amount of hours to use for sick time, FSL or FMLA. If you have hours available then there is nothing they can do other than be upset at you. Make sure you see a doctor TODAY and have them write you a Dr.'s note - tell him/her your situation at work. Especially if you work with food. It is not your responsibility to find someone to cover your shift....that's what the managers job is.

No, they can't MAKE you go to work.
No, they can't MAKE you find someone to cover your shift.
If you're too sick to do the job, go to the doctor and get the required paperwork.

I think in the UK (I don't know where your from) that if a doctor signs you off then that's it ...... I would imagine it's against the law to make you work sick. Especially if you might have something contagious!!!
If you do go in take a vegetable soup in ....... sneak it into your mouth and then vomit all over your boss ....... that'll teach em...

Yes it is illegal. If you're sick, you're sick. Is there a human resources dept. that could give you a hand here? Hope you feel better soon. I'm so sorry that your work is being less than sensitive about this.

You might want to check your attendance policy for work. We can have so many a rolling year, not sure about yours. If we go over the alloted amount, we can get suspended and then termed. Good luck.

Some jobs require somebody to be on shift...but usually a supervisor has to fill the space if you can't get coverage. I wouldn't worry, if u get a Dr.'s note, technically they cannot fire you.

So, go in & cough all over the people who told you to come in...you will no doubt infect a bunch of people & then they will have more sick outs...don't people realize that??

I have no idea. Maybe you should call your HR and see what they say. I also would go to your doctor and get that doctors excuse, just in case, it may save your job.
