I have a 20gal tank and I think I'm going to go freshwater. I'm thinking of getting 2 goldfish and some smaller fish. What should the smaller fish be?

I already know about setting up tanks, I have a 10gal FW and a 55gal SW, but was just looking for info on tank mates. I've never had a goldfish and know nothing about them. What colorful fish would you suggest for the 20gal?

I would suggest only one goldfish as they do need some space and 20 gallons works out well for one. You can add a few white clouds, guppies, danio or some corys cats to the tank if you add a heater set to keep the tank from going below about 70.

Besure to cycle the tank before adding fish. It will be far faster and much better for the fish if you cycle it without fish. Here's a link about that:

Hope that helps

with a 20 gallon you are pretty limited but if the goldfish are small get a couple of platties or a pleco maybe but eventually the goldfish will grw out of the tank and possibly eat the platties I don't suggest goldfish at all really. We have a 55 gallon community tank (non-agressive) and we have an array of platties, plecos, snails, rainbow fish, correy cats, and a few other odd fish just make sure you dont get anything that the goldfish if you so decide will eat.

There are many fish that go with goldfish, such as Comet Tails, Shubunkins, Sunfish, Ryukin Veiltails, Pearlscales, Red-Cap Orandas, and Lionheads.

With 2 goldfish your tank is allready full. And they will need a bigger tank in about a year.
