x+y=5
xy=8

you want to find 1/x + 1/y. Now 1/x +1/y = (x+y)/xy (do you see why?) and so the sum of the reciprocals is 5/8.

ab = 8, a + b = 5

What is needed is 1/a + 1/b

1/a + 1/b = b + a / ab = 5/8
