I'm trying to answer a trivia question, and i just cannot find the answer. The question is "What mathematical shape does a cannonball trace in flight?" I've tried every curved based shape that I can think of, but can't come up with the right answer.

If anyone is interested in seeing the web site in question, here it is.

Parabola was the correct answer, but I have to wait four hours to award "best answer" status.

It's a parabola - the horseshoe-shape you see in the graph of y=x^2. For the cannonball, it's upside down, like a frowny shape.

In a vacuum it would be a parabola. In the real world, the curve becomes more eccentric because of resistance to air, more of a hyperbola with a steeper curve at the end of the flight.

Ummm... it doesn't go to the link because there is "Unauthorized Access" to the website. Anyways... did you try "parabola" as the answer? That is typically how projectiles are mathematically represented.
