Looks like you only have half of the set--you are missing the 5 state quarters also minted that year. S is the "mint mark" for the San Francisco mint. That is where all current proof coins are minted, and have been for many years. I don't believe any coins minted there are placed in circulation today; although they were in the past, so you may occasionally see pennies and nickles in circulation with the S mint mark. Currently, coins for circulation are produced in Denver (D) and Philadelphia (P). A number of other cities have had minting facilities in the past, but you won't see those other marks in circulation today.

Proof sets from 1936-1964 were struck at the Philadelphia mint and had no mint mark on them. Proof sets struck from 1968 to date were struck at the San Francisco and the S on each coin is their mint mark.It should be a 10 coin set, there should also be 5 state quarters in their own holder as well as the other coins in their holder. The 10 coin set is worth $10 to a dealer. Without them you might be able to sell it for a few dollars. The 2000 set had a high mintage 3.082,572, more people wanted one due to the date 2000. If the coins are nice and frosted hold onto them for a while.

The 'S' mark is the San Fransisco mint mark. Why only the 5 coins? The proof would have the 5 quarters that came out that year. There are silver and clad sets too. According to the site I looked at, this set isn't worth as much as the 1999 and 2001 sets. But it is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it. Check at a local coin dealer to compare prices.

The "s" on a coin referrers to the mint that produced it - in this case, San Fransisco.

As for the value of the set - it is hard to say as it depends partly on the condition of the coins (flawless ones are worth more) and the overall market demand for that year. Currently on eBay proof sets for the year 2000 are going for about $25; however, this number is likely to go up over the years.

However, it is worth noting that you should also have another part to the set that contains five quarters for that year - not having that part of the set might drive the value of the set down a bit.

1971-S Proof Set is estmated at about $10.00. The issue price was $5.00, so they have effectivley doubled in value. So long as the seal has not been opened or any scratched or fingerprints are not visible. I suggest calling your nearest coin shop. Check the Nickel in your set. If the Nickel does not have the Mint Mark on it, the set is valued at much more.
