(4x^3 y)^1/2 divided by (9xy)^1/2
=(4^1/2)(x^3/2)(y^1/2)/
(9^1/2)(x^1/2)(y^1/2)
=(2/3)(x^[3/2-1/2] y^[1/2-1/2])
=2xy^0/3
=2x/3 [ as y^0=1]

Something raised to the 1/2 power is the same as the square root of that same thing. Also, the quotient of square roots is the same as the square root of the quotient.

In other words:

= [(4x^3y)/(9xy)]^1/2

= [4x^2/9]^1/2 { Canceled out one x & y from top & bottom }

= +/- 2x/3 { Square root of the stuff in the brackets }

I'm not sure if this is exactly right.. but heres how I tried it:

1. You start with the order of operations. Parenthasies, Exponents, Multiplication/Division, Addition/Subtraction:
4x*3y= 12xy

2. So now you have the expression: (12xy)^1/2 / (9xy)^1/2
Still following the order of operations, you do the exponents.

12^1/2=the square root of 12= 2*the square root of 3= about 3.5

9^1/2= the square root of 9= 3

3. Now you are left with: (3.5xy) / (3xy) And now you divide.

Expanded form: xy+xy+xy+1/2xy /
xy+xy+xy

Cancel out 3 sets of xy's: 1/2xy

Hope that helps some.. like I said I'm not sure if it's right.

^^

this is my step by step explanation...

since both terms (the numerator and the denominator) have same exponent.. we can say that it also equals to

(4x^3y over 9xy)^1/2 or square root of 4x^3y over 9xy

let us simplify first the term inside the parenthesis...

4x^3y / 9xy = 4/9 x^3/x y/y

the answer will be...

4x^2 / 9

then... let us square the term...

the square root of 4 is 2
9 is 3
x^2 is x

the answer is

+2x/3 or -2x/3

:)

The quotient of square roots is the square root of the quotient.

(4x^3y)^1/2/(9xy)^1/2 = (4x^3y/9xy)^1/2 =

(4/9x^2)^1/2 = +/-2/3x

(4x³.y)^(1/2) / (9xy)^(1/2)
[ 4x³.y / (9xy)]^(1/2) ]
[2x² / 3]^(1/2)
(√2/√3).x
= (1/3).√6.x
