Check these websites - the first two, especially, offer fairly simple explanations.

Practice some of their questions on your own to see if you understand after you read their directions. Practice can be boring - but it's the best way to get good at what you need to do.

I guess you mean 40/8 = 5
and
54612/8 =?

to do this start from left:
54612/8=6 (because you can put 8 6 times in 54 then deduct 48 from 54 which gives a rest of 6 which we bring down and also bring down the next number so it looks like

54612/8=68 (eight goes 8 times in 66 rest 2)
>66

54612/8=6826
> 66
>> 21
>>> 52
>>>> 4

now we have a remaining rest of 4 which we can further devide by making a decimal point and bringing down the 0 (zero) as 54612 is the same as 54612.0 so it looks like that:

54612/8=6826.5
> 66
>> 21
>>> 52
>>>> 40
>>>>> 0 rest
(40/8 = 5 you can neglect the decimal point in the lower line as long as you make it in the result line)
That's the way we learned it here in school in Austria but it's easier to do on a piece of paper than on the keyboard.
I used the > as spacers only otherwise all the numbers in the lower lines would be on the very left side, you don't need them on paper

You just have to take it one step at a time.

In the example you gave, you have 54612/8. First, take 5/8. Since this is less than 1, you have to take the next digit: 54/8. This is 6, with a remainder of 6.

So, you take this remainder, and put the next digit in the original numerator next to it: 66. 66/8 = 8, remainder 2.

Take the next digit and place it next to the 2: 21/8 = 2, remainder 5.

Now, take the last digit and place it next to the 4: 52/8 = 6 remainder 4.

Now, you have your answer: 6815, remainder 4 = 6826½ = 6826.5

take it slowly and have patience

54/8 gives you 6 remainder 6
you carry down the 6 giving you with 66/8 which is 8 remainder 2
then you carry down the 1 giving you 21/8 which is 2 remainder 5
then you carry down the 2 giving you 52/8 which is 6 remainder 4

Since you've run out of numbers, you add a decimal point and carry down a zero which is 40/8 giving you 5

so....
54612/8 is 6826.5
