Nah, I just search out all the slugs, and eat their shells.

The snails are just lucky I don't like THEIR shells.

An additional advantage slugs have over snails is that they are able to live in areas with acidic soils.

The acid in many forest floors (from tannic acid) breaks down the calcium carbonate that makes up a snail's shell.

So slugs are able to live in a lot of areas that snails cannot. One example would be the temperate rain forests of the Pacific Northwest, where slugs are plentiful, and large, but snails cannot live.

It's all a matter of adaptation and environment. Some critters do better in some areas than others. Those that survive thrive in those conditions.

positive side:
snail's shell gives them defense against small predators.
slug can slip to small cracks to run away from predators, because it has no big shell on the back.

negative side:
snail depends too much on the shell, so snail pulls the body in when it's in danger it also becomes slower with the shell on it's back, making it easy to catch and the shell can be broken easily by some species of birds or another smarter animal.
slug are (obviously) unprotected against anything, it can only hide without any defense, and it's easy to get infected by bacterias and small parasites.

slugs are a form of snail.. they live in gardens ( where there are no shells to be found laying around as abandoned homes for them to move into)

Is there no just God? I don't know. About 40,000 children die each day of starvation. When you stop worrying about slugs, you tell me about justice for humans.
