Would a 6800GT be better? What's the performance difference?

Don't get either- the 6000 series cards are old. Nvidia has long since moved on to the 7000 and 8000 series of cards.

I'd rather spend a tiny bit more and have a much better card in the 7600GT:

With the $15 rebate, it's only $79...

If you really want a 6800 card, then the 6800GT is faster than the 6800XT. Forget my earlier recommendation of the 7300 series, it's a cheap card that performs poorly. But further up the line like the 7600,7900 etc- performance blows away the earlier generation (and the cost goes up)

Here are the direct comparisons below:

The 6800GT is faster then then 6800XT.

The 6800XT is faster then the 7300 series. The 7600GT might be the best choice for that price range.

The X1950GT would be faster, but cost a little more:

It's according to your budget and how much you can spend, the more money, the faster the card will go.

HI, i was not able to find 6800gt but saw 6800 and 6800xt. The only difference is the number of pixel pipelines. its more in 6800 so it has some advantage over 6800xt..i vote for 6800 with 12 pixel pipelines...

your link doesnt work. but i cant find a 6800 gt on newegg. all i can find is the gs and xt. but knowing nvidia cards normally its in the order of 6800, 6g00 gs, 6800 gt, 6800xt from worst to best so the xt is probably better.
