I am upgrading an only Dell Dimension 8100, and the highest processor possible for this old motherboard is a 2.8Ghz, the next is the 2.6Ghz. The 2.6 would cost $67, the 2.8 would be $169, is it worth the price for the additional 200 mhz in speed?

Category: Intel Pentium 4 Socket-478 Processors

Manufacturer: Intel®

Description: Intel Pentium 4 2.80GHz 400MHz 512K 478 pin CPU OEM
Price: $169.00

Is the 2.8

Description: Intel Pentium 4 2.6GHz 400MHz 478 pin CPU OEM
Specifications:
Processor Frequency 2.60 GHz
Package Type 478 pin PPGA FC-PGA2
Bus Speed 400 MHz
L2 Cache Size 512 KB
L2 Cache Speed 2.60 GHz
Manufacturing Technology 0.13 micron
Bus/Core Ratio 26
Box Order Code BX80532PC2600D
OEM Order Code RK80532PC064512

Those are the details on the 2, the reason I think the 2.8 is so much more is because there are very few 2.8 400Mhz bus speed processors(this is a very old computer). Newegg and tigerdirect don't have either version, so I was going to either purchase it from powerleap, who I bout a 423-478 adapter, or starmicro, which had the chips for less money as posted above regarding price.

It depends on the models of processors but I would have to say no. If you could post additional details about the type of processors each are and model then I could tell you for sure if it's worth it or not. But from what you tell me now I would have to say no it's not worth it. If its a 2.8 GHz Pentium vs. a 2.6 GHz Celeron then it is definately worth it as there is a huge difference in performance between the two. Good Luck HTH.

Response to Additional Details:

You are right the 2.8 GHz is so expensive because it was the top of the line processor for the 478 chipset and they didn't make many of them as the 775 chipset had come out about the same time as it. There is not a big enough difference for you to get it over the 2.6 GHz. Stick with your wits and just buy the 2.6GHz and save the money for something else. Good Luck HTH.

theres a few possibilities for the price difference...

1) the 2.6 isnt a hyperthreading chip while the 2.8 is..

2) and the 2.8 probably has a larger l2 cache (at the price difference your talking.. it might be a 1mb cache chip)

if your not going to really push the system, I'd probably save the $100 and get the 2.6..

where are you buying the chip from? dell, or are you going to tiger direct or newegg??

I think you can do better on the 2.8ghz processor price. Make sure you get the correct socket (478, 775, whatever)

Definitely not worth the extra $100!

This has already been said, but you will probably not notice a 100 mhz speed difference, but if you spend that $100 on more ram, you will notice a huge performance difference.

Both of those processors are so old that neither one is worth what they are charging. That said, if you must buy one, buy the cheaper one, you are not getting taken quite as badly on that one as with the other one.

is it an AMD cpu or intel. thats quite a price jump....no it isnt worth it. see if your bios will allow you to overclock. you can probably get that 2.6 then run it at 2.7 or 2.8.
