Catapults were designed to breach standing structures like forts and castles. Since the American Indians had neither forts nor castles, they never developed catapults.

A catapult would only have been effective against one Indian culture--the cliff dwellers of the southwest. It's successor, the cannon, was brought to the US by colonists, but it wasn't very effective against American Indians for the same reason a catapult wouldn't have been effective--no permanent structures.

no american indians did not. they lived a nomadic lifestyle following herds of animals for food so they didnt have permanent structures. they also had no concept of ownership they got what they needed from the earth and lived in harmony with it. without they had no fences or boundries that were marked. most of their structures were tee-pee's and lean-to's that they could disassemble and take with them. they would have had no need to build catapults as they are a seige weapon designed to batter the walls of a castle or city until they destroyed it, thus allowing ground troops inside the defensive structure. the american indians had territory they controlled, or could defend from other tribes, but there was enough room that they could go long periods without ever seeing a different tribe, much less warring with them. could the indians have developed the technology for catapults? who can say their lifestyle was not one of ownership so the idea of them building fences, walls and permanent structures would have been far in the future of their people's lifeline. it would almost be the equivalent of asking if a king from the dark ages would need a submarine.
