I used to be able to overlook his defense because he swings a good bat. At this point though, his defense is just too horrendous to be ignored. I think the cubs would be better with Jim Abbott behind the plate. Hell, if Ray Charles played baseball, the cubs might be better off digging up his corpse and throwing him behind the plate. What do you all think? A blind corpse for a catcher, or Michael Barrett?

He's about league average. There are plenty worse.

The worst catcher in baseball history was Bill Bergen, who played for the Reds and Dodgers from 1901-11. In 3028 AB, he hit .170, 2, 193. His carrer OBP was .194, career slugging average was .201.

Barrett is no Piazza in his prime, but he's also not a Bergen.

Barrett is hitting under .250 and is not doing very much offensively. He has committed 5 errors behind the plate and has a fielding percentage of .987. But most importantly he is responsible for keeping the pitchers under control and calling a good game behind the plate. He has been in a fist fight with Zambrano and also seems to be having problems with others on the staff as well. You bring up a good point but I am not sure if Ray Charles could do any better.

Barrett is a good catcher, but this year there's just something off about him. He's making alot of mental mistakes that you would expect from a rookie or a minor leaguer, but certainly not from a veteran major league catcher. He'll never admit it but I think it's just a mental thing.

Remember last year when he consistently hit third when D.Lee was injured? He hit around .300 most of the season. He's more of an offensive catcher, but his defense is much better than Piazza's. When he's right, he's one of the top 5 catchers in the National League.

Oh yeah, lets not forget that he'sa terrible baserunner too...
Yep. He's pretty bad.
And he punches like a girl.
I saw the game v. the ChiSox last year. AJ didn't get 'decked' or 'knocked out'.

You gotta be pretty bad when your battery mate (Big Z) puts the BEAT DOWN on ya.

high comedy!

Just wrong, dude...

But to answer your question: no. Remember that game for the Nationals when Robinson had to pull his catcher out in the middle of the game for playing so bad...?

In history? He's not even the worst catcher currently in the majors.

There are many other catchers in the leauge that are worse than Barrett. However, I do agree he sucks nonetheless.
