Wow... Can't believe the negative opinions here. Ya know, there are good thing going on there too. Involving: schools, infrastructure, police, roads, water, and more. You have to keep in mind that we have a current news media pushing, twisting and manipulating everything we hear from that area, in hopes of a white house rocking, president replacing, issue. And yet they don't get one. So they manipulate what they DO have.
Sure its bad right now, its a war. It would be nice to see a few of the other sides statistics instead of just ours though. Seriously, think about what effect this would have. The type of information we are given gives an appearance that we send troops and they just die as if in front of a firing squad. No reasons, no explanations of what was involved, well most of the time anyway. For the most part all we hear is... another 4,5,7 troops dead raising the total to... We never hear the other side. That those 4 or 5, or 7 troops were responsible for elimination of 20, 30, or 120 insurgents. THIS TYPE OF THING HAS HAPPENED.
Yes, we are doing good there. Steering a country in the right direction is similar to driving an ocean liner through a slalom course... It takes a lot of time for change, and Americans are impatient.
To our troops... GOOD WORK ! I am patient and await you safe return.

I am a US Army soldier currently serving at VBC in Iraq. You know the most honorable people I have ever met are military. We don't choose our governments policy but we are responsible for our own actions and I know the vast majority of soldiers here make positive contributions to peoples lives here.
The thing is you guys can't know what is actually going on in Iraq. You must think every street in Iraq is a warzone which is not the case! The problem is where you have shiia, sunni, and kurds living close to eachother, like Baghdad. If you go to the vast majority of towns , they are thriving and people live very peacefully and other neighborhoods are like walking into hell.
There is some deep seeded hate that was here well before we got into Iraq, Sadaam regime just buried it. I kept thinking that sooner or later all these radicals would kill eachother and leave the majority of Iraqis who want to leave in peace left. But now I think we are moving into revenge killings. I have been here ten months and I still don't understand why they are killing eachother.

Definitely.
When I got to Iraq, Habinnaya and TQ were ghost towns. Shortly after the elections, it was nice to be able to sit on the FOB and look down into the cities and see kids playing, people shopping and others going about their day in safety.
Yes, the improvements are there, it's just that anyone who hasn't been there (like those saying no to the question) can't see them, so they only see what the media lets them see.....The media is wrong.

No were aren't and that was never and will never be the goal.
We are making it a place that is better controlled by U.S. interests, that has always been the objective.
The violence has greatly increased since before the war but the American government has never cared about the violence and instability. The government is only concerned with creating a governmental system that is loyal to America.
In the view of the government we are making it a better place for American interest. We will only leave once this government is very well established and protected.
The American government cares not of the troops, as if the government would care about Iraqi citizens.
To simply answer your question considering agendas, goals, and accomplishments...
My view: NO
American government: YES

We should be heading home now. I've never believed bush was right about going to Iraq. Yes, saddam is gone but in the eyes of SOME Iraqi's, Americans have caused more problems. It is not safe to go about their daily lives and thousands of innocent civilians have been killed.
A better place? I don't know. I've not been there but the media presents pictures of a devastated, war torn country.

No, it is NOT a better place. Mind you, no one is denying the fact that Saddam Hussein was a monster, but at least when he was in charge, there was more order. Now there is nothing but chaos and Iraq has now become a hotbed of terrorist activity. Nowadays, it's all too common for people to disappear from the streets of Baghdad and be found dead several days later.

i think it remains the same still blowing each other off the map for religion it'll never change which is a sad realization when you think of all the children being taught hatred for others that are not the same as they are it's never going to change unless they learn tolerance for others but it'll never happen living in the south as i do there are still bigoted white racists that discriminate against anyone who's not southern and white i hate it most of this mind set comes from their parents instilling hatred for others just as the entire middle east does

I think we are making Iraq a better place than it was under Saddam. Even though there is violence the people are now free and running their own country.

No, I do not think so. We have almost totally annihilated their infrastructure... women and children killed daily.. the children the hope of the future...families torn apart, people maimed and no proper treatment. Water polluted.. altho apparently the oil is good according to Halibruton.
We went in there apparently to get rid of Saddam.. not at their request but at Bush's bidding. We did that.. and then we promised a better life for all... they must be wondering just when that better life comes.

right now no. one can only hope that the situation will change but the power needs to be returned to the Iraqi's as soon as possible because right now they still probably feel like being in an "occupied territory"
