Maybe by not buying any more equipment for their fish tanks than necessary. See this website: http://www.freecycle.org/ It shows member groups by city/location. All listed items are free.

http://www.craigslist.org/about/cities.html - is like an online classifieds, set up the same way.

You can also check yard sales, your newspaper, etc.

Budget

If you spend your money like you have a hole in your pocket you will not have any. Keep track of how you spend your money and cut out the unnecessary spending.

Set yourself up with a budget and stick to it. Save for the big ticket items you want to buy. It doesn't have to be new.

Shop at garage sales - Be picky as many garage sales they are trying to make a profit so move on. You get one of those garage sales where they really want to get rid of there items. Your purchases are dirt cheap and the items are in excellent condition.

Thrift stores you can find good finds here also.

Trash - when people are throwing out bulky items for heavy pick up drive by the pile and see if there is anything you can use. And its free. A little embarrassing at first but you can really find some nice items. free

yeah, drink tap water from an old bottle dont buy new bottled water or soda, pack a sandwhich for lunch dont eat out, make a travel mug of coffee dont buy at starbucks, dont buy that extra pair of shoes you dont need and dont get your hair done every couple weeks, make do with what you have for a month and you will be surprised by the amount of money you save that you would have nickled and dimed away.

Most people have jobs. If you can't afford to buy a tank and others things then don't.
