Is there a way to fix this so that the kids can open the freezer after it has been recently shut? I can barely open it for the first few minutes.

Show the kids how to just "slowly" close the door. Bring the door down to where it just starts to touch the freezer and then just press it closed.

The fan in newer freezers forms vacum when you close them . This is to make sure that the door has sealed properly and saves energy. The best thing to do is just wait till the vacum process has ended or you may end up bending the door.
The vacum process should not take more than 60 seconds.

if the door is slammed shut air is forced out and creates a partial vacuum which holds the door shut as air seeps back in the air pressure is equalised

The door is being closed too fast which is pushing air out and creating a vacuum
