I was given a used laptop (IBM Thinkpad Model T42), and it's about 2 years old. It's also pretty virus full I think. My friend does not have a CD to reinstall Windows XP either, who said it was preinstalled. I don't want to have to purchase a CD, as the laptop has been heavily used and there is no promise that it will last long. Several AV scans hasn't helped at all. Any suggestions on what to do? Can I still reinstall or restore XP? Or am I going to have to go with something like Ubuntu? If so, how do I overwrite XP? Sorry if these are too many questions, but I have no idea what to do. Please speak to me like I'm a child because I'm not all that tech savvy.

You can just reinstall. As long as the XP sticker is still available just "borrow" a CD reinstall using the key that is on the sticker. You may have to download the drivers from IBM but they are available so you should be in good shape.

Just boot the XP CD and do a full reinstallation, including reformat!

Also take a look at the very first screen during the boot, some of these offer the option at boot to RESTORE opertaing system. In which case all you need to do is press the key to reload the XP.
