Had my touchpad for 2 years.

If I am surfing the net it is no problem once I got used to it.

If I am working, especially word processing, it randomly moved my mouse around so I am typing in the wrong place. THAT drives me totally nuts.

Of course for games it is totally worthless. As previously said, get a real mouse

Sometimes it does, like when I have to drag and drop, especially when I want to play games. That's why I bought an external mouse. Using an external mouse (PS/2 or USB) is easier to use than a touchpad.

I've gotten so use to the touchpad on my Mac that I find it hard to work with a mouse for day-to-day stuff. I still like a good optical mouse for graphic design work though.

Because you're always resting your thumbs down there and moving the mouse around?

Yeah I hate that too. I had to teach myself to keep my hands more spread apart on the keyboard so I kinda had to adjust to the different way my hands were pointing so I would hit the right keys. Keep your thumbs on the space bar at all times on the ends and that SHOULD help.

I installed a USB wireless mouse. I can use both if I want at the same time no problem. You can plug in a wired USB mouse. XP should detect it without extra software.

Mine has its moments. It works fine at school, but at home it doesn't for whatever reason.
