my fish, a new upside down cat, was bought yesterday along with a pair of baby yoyo loaches and some ghost shrimp. but while the yoyo loaches acclimated no problem, the catfish went crazy! swimming in large circles around the tank, and only stopped when i turned off the light. but he's still shaking. what's wrong?

Thanks, guys. <3 the catfish has calmed considerably, and he's swimming some (only at night) and eating pretty well. =D no one's bothering him, and he's still shy but exhibiting his characteristic upside down swimming.

I shall call him Sir Tips-A-Lot. =P

Acclimation should take at least an hour. You add 1/2 cup of tank water to the bag every 15 minutes so the pH and temperature equalize. Never dump the water from the bag into your tank (many nasty possibilities as far as parasites and diseases from the overcrowded pet store tanks). Net the fish out of the bag and discard the water.

Scaleless fish like the upside down cats and loaches are the most difficult to acclimatize because they are more delicate than scaled fish. Watch them closely for at least a week to make sure they do not come down with ich (small white spots on fins and body, like salt crystals). It is a parasite. Scaleless fish are very susceptible to ich soon after a tank transfer.

Another possibility for the seizure-like activity is that the pH was radically different in your tank from the tank he was in at the pet store. A difference of only .5 on the pH scale is enough to send them into pH shock. Sometimes it is fatal, sometimes they pull through.

Im guessing that its environmental shock. Try waiting for a few more days, hopefully he/she will get comfortable with the environment he/she is in. Good Luck
