im 21 and just graduated from college with my b.s. in secondary education and my b.a. in citizenship. i am looking to apply for teaching jobs online and i need a teaching resume. i am assuming that i don't put previous work experience on it because it has nothing to do with teaching.

can anyone show me an example or tell me what to do?
i live in pittsburgh, pa if that helps at all.

Congratulations on your degree. Welcome to the teaching career.

In my opinion, getting that first teaching job is all about a principal giving you the opportunity. Your resume should reflect the facts that support that opportunity.

Okay - the principal is probably pretty smart -- he/she knows that if you graduated in 2007, you probably don't have teaching experience :) So - there's no real reason to try to pad it. I am assuming that you had at least one internship. List the internships just as you would a job - with dates, responsibilities, name of supervising teacher, etc. The principal will probably want to contact those people.

As for previous jobs - if those jobs demonstrate that you are a responsible person, then list them. If it is McDonald's or Burger King or something like that, I would skip it. But if you have worked in a professional setting, then list those jobs. If not - don't worry about it. You're 21 years old. A big resume would look fake.

If you have been involved in children's groups (Sunday school teacher, YMCA assistant, etc.) then list those under "activities." If you haven't, don't worry about it.

A principal hiring a 21 year old is looking for (a) maturity and (b) potential. When you get the interview, emphasize those aspects. Your references will be VERY important.

Yes, you should put some of your previous work experience. Even if it has nothing to do with teaching, it will show that you have worked, and it will give them an additional reference to call to check on your character. Schools usually want to know a about your background. Once you've interviewed and been offered a job, they'll require an official background check with fingerprints and all. You are dealing with childred.

That's not true. List all your previous work experience. This shows that a) you've held a job b) you know how to organize your day and your tasks at work and c) you're a responsible person. Obtain references from your former employers, even if it was mowing the grass. References indicating you're a hard, persistent worker are extremely important. Given someone who has never worked and another person who has held a job and has good references, the second person will be the one hired. Good luck to you. We need more teachers.
