I'm looking for a fast, high-powered, versatile computer for video & photo editing. Should I go with a PC or a Mac? I know that I can get more computing power for less money with a PC, but Macs seem to be more suited for graphic work. For PCs or Macs, is there a particular model that is recommended for these tasks?

this used to be a very important issue because there was a time when macs drastically out performed PCs in creative fields such as graphics and video.

right now existing technology in both breeds far exceeds the necessary technology to get these things done. Its going to come down to a matter of preference for you. if you are accustomed to a windows box, i'd say stick with it, you will be less frustrated trying to learn new details of an OS. If you are accustomed to a Mac, stick with it.

On the down low, if this affects you:
keep in mind it is a lot harder to get pirate software for macs. if you are doing this work for a business, you will be buying the software anyway, but if it is a hobby machine and like many other hobbyists you were hoping to snarf a free copy of photoshop or after affects, you will have much better odds getting pirate versions of these things for a windows machine.

both platforms are pretty solid. OSX being based on the BSD core from years ago makes it a pretty darn solid foundation. - Macs also are less susceptible to viruses (for the time being).

it comes down to preference in the end though. do to a store that sells macs and cop a cheap feel on the OS see how you like it. Strange, lumpy and unfamiliar? get a PC. smooth and ultra hot? get a mac. its in the eye of the beholder.

have fun.

you should never believe everything your told about the mac, the only thing you should believe is yes it is very expensive, and your tied to the company if you buy one, both for maintenance and software which again is expensive

now there is a lot about the PC's you don't know that would be worth checking out, first pick a local computer shop thats near by and have them build you one to the highest spec that suits your pocket,

The reason for this is four fold, should anything go wrong with it you haven't far to got to have it repaired, next you will get a better service,

Next what opperating system are you thinking of installing on this new system

Windows Vista
Windows XP.
Mac OS/X should it be a mac system
Linux is another choice that comes in many flavors that is suitable for any application you may require. The best about Linux is everything comes Free, The Operating system and all the software you'll ever need

You can run a Virtual system Linux and Windows at the same time on a pc,

Heres the thing. Macs are more suited for video and photo editing however you can make pcs more suited for video and photo editing. You can build (or have them built) for that specific reason. Pcs i find have more peripherals that can be very nice for editing, Macs are just plain made for it. Its really up to you. Id go to a store like Frys and see what you can see. Test some out.
