blotch (blŏch) pronunciation
n.

1. A spot or blot; a splotch.
2. A discoloration on the skin; a blemish.
3. Any of several plant diseases caused by fungi and resulting in brown or black dead areas on leaves or fruit.

Plants would die if too close to the sun so cross off #3. A spot or blot really wouldn't show up because the sun is very bright so cross of #1.

#2 Discolor the sun? I believe you would have to give it a massive infusion of some other element to change the sun to something that emitted a color other than white.

This has already been proposed as a weapon. You could build a giant sun screen in orbit that would prevent any sunlight from reaching any selected area on Earth. This would surely cause that area to suffer when all plant life dies ,and then all animal life as well! If you go north above the arctic circle you will see the result of a long night! What this would do to the weather patterns is another question that needs to be answered! You could also build a giant mirror to increase the sunlight on any given area as well with equally bad results! Which approach do you think would be most destructive?

No, but if you can find a way to travel faster than 1000 MPH and maintain that speed you could stay in the earth's shadow, night, indefinitely.

Build the sunblocker at L1 instead. You would cause a permanent "eclipse" as the sunblocker wouldn´t move in relation to earth.

And, why, pray tell, would we want to block out that which keeps us from freezing to death in the dark, and starving to death, to boot, eh?

No ideas, because the notion is foolish at best. And, once again, if you don't have a patio umbrella or a roof over your head, then what technology are you considering?
