I'm a huge fan of AMD and have been using them for years. However, right now Intel has them in a bad spot with the power of their Core 2 Duo processors

If you are looking for power I would go with Core 2 Duo -- they process faster and use less power so they put less strain on your CPU

I have seen some awesome deals on some midrange AMD CPU's which should be good enough if you are building a budget gaming box.

You probably already know this but your video card is going to have the biggest boost to your gaming experience. If buying an expensive CPU means dropping to an older video card then go with a less expensive CPU. The Nvidia 8xxx line looks pretty appealing now that they have he 8500 and 8600 cards out.

Of course as you mentioned a quad core and 8800 would be rocking, the price tag would kill ya :)

good luck

Lol AMD is not more advanced than intel when it comes to CPU's Intel is alot better for Multi tasking and gaming all there processor last longer and are power efficient. Intel has the lead so consider getting an Intel processor.

Check this out and just replace the E6420 w/ an E6600:

BUT take note that gaming performance is a lot more dependent on the GPU than on the processor. GPU architecture and v-RAM clockspeed spell the difference in games.

You would to let us know if there is a budget on this system.

When you replace items...they can be expensive and if you plan on using existing hardware...is it compatible.
