Telephone company hires you at a certain weight to perform a job ( climbing poles) and you gain 200 lbs and cant perform your job duties. Do they have the right to fire you? or should the
supervisor require your co workers to take up slack for you.
Just reading an article that obese workers want disabled status.

When this person was hired he weighed 180 which is with in range for for 6' tall person, but put 200lb on top of that and he cant do the job...you may not like the term fat, but that's what it is.

When a person takes a position, they agree to certain requirements of the position. These requirements may be to lift packages that weigh in excess of a certain weight, travel, be on call 24 X 7, or climb poles in this case.

If at any time a person becomes in-able to perform their job, then the management team has to what is best for the organization. There are many different ways that companies can address these situations including health programs, assistance programs and general training programs.

The cost of interviewing, training and retaining employees is expensive so companies will do whatever is possible to work with employees who become in-able to perform their functions.

However, it is wrong to legislate and protect workers from taking some responsibility for their actions. If companies are forced to retain workers that cannot perform their functions, then there is no incentive for employees to work their best

Many would argue that there is already a level of complacency in the work place and that employees do not do more than what is required, but forcing co-workers to pick up for others that are unable to perform will lead to disgruntle employees and a poor work environment.

There is more at stake than persons retaining an income.

Yes they have the right. But do I think it's Fair? No. I definatly don't think co workers shouldn't take up slack. If you can't get the job done, then you should probably quit. I think if the person was obese and they continue to get the job done, let them stay on.

I do not think obese people should have the disabled status. They can control their problem unlike other people who have actual mental and physical handicaps. It is that person's own fault that they are obese. People with mental and physical handicaps 99% of the time cannot control it. There are medicines and things to help get it under control but nothing that can stop it forever.

First off, "fat" is an ugly word.

Second of all, I don't think it would be very fair for them to fire the person who gained weight. You obviously can't go climbing poles if you are very overweight, but maybe they can give them a different position within the company.

I disagree with the fact that overweight people should be concidered disabled. Unless you are morbidly obese and can't leave the house because you can't fit through the door, then you shouldn't be concidered disabled.

i think each person is different.. gaining lots of weight can cause other health promblem and make them disable..but not all fat people are disable..some of them can move around a lot better than skinny people as for that one in peticular.. depends on how long he has been with the company and is he qualified to do another job..

i don't know about this one cause the government says they want fat people to pay more taxs cause they are costing the HHS a fortune when they go into hospital with problems caused by the weight .

Yes sterotyped.
I am fat and working on it, as there are certain negatives associated with the appearance.
