The US and the EU will still be running the world and will still be very busy servicing a hungry, growing China. Which will be bigger over all economically by then, but have far less per capita.
We have the education, engineering, scientific, and productivity preeminence and that is not likely to change much in 20 years (but it is eroding).
Large stable countries with a reasonably well educated workforce will surge substantially (Mexico, Brazil, India, China. All of which are already top 10 economies) but won't catch up to the US or EU in per capita GDP or productivity in 20 years. Now if you asked about 50 years out - That's harder to say.

In 20 years, China and India will be world economic leaders. They will be facing huge population problems and labor issues. How they deal with those issues will determine how they are perceived in the world as a whole. I do believe that India will have more ability to come out the winner. The US will probably be closer to what Germany, Japan, and England are now. Players but not the most effective.

IF the USA return to leading by example, rather than ruling by intimidation, it can remain the most effective. If it stays on its current course, the rest of the world wlll gang up on it, and then it will be China.
USA and China should work together to build the 22nd Century. More is achieved through co-operation than is achieved by conflicting interests.

All those countries came into power by holding the others captive to their superior systems of transportation, communication, military might and food distribution. That's who will be most effective always.

No, we are becoming a welfare state, and when we pay out more than we bring in, our goose is cooked, and in about 20 years sounds about right
