Gee...criminally insane bone-ugly murderer or not-too-bright rich hunk...tough choice.

Going by the book, which inspired all the movies and the musicals, Christine at first believed the Phantom was the real and true Angel of Music, sent from Heaven by her father to guide and teach her; Raoul was a childhood sweetheart she hadn't seen in close to ten years at least---it was when the Phantom lured her from her Opera dressing room and down into the cellars of the Opera that she finally realized he was human, and dangerous to boot---and then when she tore away his mask and saw the living skull beneath, raging at her, shouting that since she had unmasked his secret she would be a prisoner of his the rest of her life, she really understood what a fix she'd gotten herself into.
Still, there's no accounting for the power of the music of the night---she hated and feared the Phantom, but pitied him his tortuous existence; although she loved Raoul, she found herself bound to the Phantom, if not by love, by music---finally, when Raoul and his guide are trapped by the Phantom and being tortured, she agrees to be the Phantom's wife in exchange for their freedom, and finds the courage and pity to kiss the Phantom without his mask. Stricken by this act of love, the Phantom releases her and Raoul and his guide back to life and freedom above, and eventually dies of a broken heart-----a heartbreaker for readers as well----
But all in all, much better for Christine's mental health and happiness to have ended up with Raoul..

OMG me too!! I always thought she should have chosen the Phantom over Raoul. He's such a wimp... The Phantom is manly and sexy! Sure he was a little crazy... But everything he did, he did for Christine! If that's not love, then I don't know what is.

I think Christine was a little attracted to the Phantom, until she pulled the mask and saw his face. People can be so shallow...

yes, obviously she is .... it started when he was singing "Music of the night," when he was holding her, you could see it in her face .... and when they were singing "Point of No Return" there was a definite attraction for both of them, you could really hear it in Christine's voice - she wasn't just acting.
And that was after she had seen his face, but she was attracted to him in spite of that.
I think she's attracted to him because of his mysterious, "bad boy" image - women like that for some reason.
Raoul was the one that she loved, because he loved her so much.
The Phantom loved her too though. I think she just wound up with Raoul because he was more "safe" - a crazy guy like the phantom could have done anything.
Plus she probably wouldn't want to live in the cellar of the opera house ..... ugh.
I wish they were together too though. Although then I would feel bad for Raoul .... oh well. I guess that's why this is such a good story, because it's so sad.

I know this movie front and back and have seen it over 100 times. It happens to be one of my favorates.

I tried to look at it from all angles and I too wish they had gotten together, but if you watch the movie and really analyze what's going on, you see that she is clearly in love with Raoul. However, she does have a strong sexual attraction to the Phantom. And she admires him greatly for coaching her and helping her to become the amazing singer that she was. But in the end, fear outweighed attraction and she knew she wanted to be with the one she loved.

I think she was a few times, when she heard him sing - especially in Music of the Night.
I do think her affections always have been for Raoul, but at times, when she was alone with the Phantom, I think she did see something in him as well.
I always feel so bad for the Phantom, not having anyone.... so sad, but yet, that it is my FAVORITE movie in the entire world!!!

yea a few times you can definatly see that she feels something... i love this play/movie because the only reason the phantom does what he does is because he loves christine and he just wants her to love him back. during the part where their doing don juan, she's acting soo well, but you can see that a bit of attraction is there.

I think she was attracted to him a few times. When he sang to her she might have seen the not-so-scary-and-dangerous side of him, but the caring and sweet and loving side of him. Her main affections were for Raoul in general.
I think she might have had very strong feelings for the phantom had he not hurt her and almost killed Raoul. She probably felt sorry for him, living alone in sadness.

I haven't read the book yet but I have been told by many people, including the commentaries from the movie itself (2004 version), that it is much closer to the film than the Broadway play is. One main difference between the book and the movie is that the book says that he was deformed after he was born, while one of the songs (which were all taken from the play long before the movie was made) says he was born that way.

The only reason why she was attracted to him was because of his music...she fell under his spell and thats the only reason why she wanted to be with him...
