Mass media better informs the public about their candidates and activities going on in government that they would not otherwise hear about. Just look at how Congress was trying to sneak through that Immigration Bill. Mass media sounded the alarm AND told the public what was REALLY in the bill. The subsequent out cry stopped the bill in its tracks. The mass media keeps the spotlight shining on DC...holds our politicians accountable.

By reporting on folly, ineptitude, graft, and corruption of government officials. Officials are just more careful and responsible when being watched.

By informing the public on issues, not just what the advocates say, but what the opposition says too. Every issue advocate is 'spinning' the message. The media have a responsibility to report what's said, but also to provide perspective, analysis, and facts so the public has something closer to the essential truth.

By reporting on neglect, problems, and injustice in society that may need government attention. This helps the public and officials align priorities. No one can govern in a vacuum

Good mass media creates a state of transparency in which the people get to know everything that's going on in the government. This way it would be harder for officials to do illegal things as they will always have to answer to the people.

Currently (for the most part) it does not. CBS, ABC, PBS, NBC and CNN are all Neo-Socialist Progressive Liberal outlets. The free media was supposed to oppose government and be a watchdog. Not any more. This is very bad for good government.
