Dilation and curettage. They dilate the cervix and clean the inside of the uterus of contents. It is often done after a miscarriage. It is also a means for an early abortion. It is also sometimes done after childbirth, when a piece of the placenta is left inside. It is sometimes performed on women who are having difficulty getting pregnant. Doc cleans out the uterus for a fresh start. I believe a D & C is usually done on an out patient basis.

An afterthought: All women have enlarged uteruses after giving birth. The uterus does not return to normal size for several weeks after giving birth. How long after birth did the dr. recommend the D & C? I had an enlarged uterus 7 years after giving birth to twins, with severe periods. The gynecologist removed my uterus.

Dilation and curettage. It's the same procedure they do in an abortion which is in a nutshell, they dilate the cervix and put an instrument up in the uterus to scrape the lining out. I had the same thing after the birth of my daughter. It's uncomfortable (to say the least) but she should be okay. It's nowhere near as painful as giving birth!

I think the D stands for dialate and C stands for cuttage (or something very similar). They dialte the cervix at the base of the uterus and insert a small scraping tool and go around the uterus' surface (inside) . Sometimes the practice is how they perform abortions. It is fairly safe and sometimes even performed outpatient.

The dilation and curettage procedure is called a D&C. More here: http://www.emedicinehealth.com/dilation_and_curettage_dandc/article_em.htm
