Blue smoke usually means oil burning. Either the rings are bad or very commonly the oil is overfilled. Is this an older mower? Must be, new ones are like cars the carb. is preset and locked so you can't normally adjust it. If overfilled just remove some.

I have the same problem, the engine started doing it after a couple of weeks from new. ( 6.75 ). I was very careful when filling the oil from new ( 5W30 oil) as to not over fill. I have checked the crankcase breather tube and all appears to be in order. The blue smoke is not at every start up, sometimes nothing at all, other times it puffs out a big cloud. I also noticed that when I turn the engine off, it blows little hints of blue smoke just before it stops, almost indicating pulling oil through the valve guides. The engine is now 18 months old and Im thinking of taking it back to the store I purchased it from to get it looked at. Interesting that others are having a similar issue with the same model engine. I have had plenty of other Briggs & Stratton engines in the past and no problems. .

Blue smoke indicates burning oil. There is no adjustment, just an overhaul.
