Iraqis were suspected as terrorists. Thus they are not considered as asylum seekers but criminals against the humankind.

Firstly some of the Iraqi asylum-seekers have been granted full refugee status. Under the old system prior to August 2005, these ppl who have been granted permanent settlement. After this date a recognised refugee is granted 5 years leave subject to "active review". Some Iraqis have been granted 4 years Exceptional leave to remain and are now upgrading this to ILR. Some have been refused asylum and have exhausted their appeal rights. At the moment there is forced removal only to the Kurdish Autonomous Zone (KAZ) such as Suleymania, Arbil. There is no forced removal to the Southern part of Iraq because of the volatile security situation. I'm sure the majority of the Iraqis can be fitted into one of the above categories.

Previously, those whose cases were accepted might be allowed to remain permanently, so that they might be able to build up their lives again. Now, because of the paranoia about asylum in the press, even though it is accepted that someone is in real danger in their own country, they are only given temporary protection, typically five years; at the end of that time, their cases are supposed to be looked at again to see if they still need protection, or if they can be sent back. This is not a good way to get people to integrate, or to help traumatised people to rebuild their lives. It's also just giving the Home Office even more work to do.
As for Iraq being liberated........

Do you actually read the news in a decent newspaper or watch it on the television? Have you really no idea of what is happening out there? Saddam isn't the issue now. There is much sectarian and political unrest now.

I often wonder that myself, sometimes they are just lost in the system and forgotten about. Plus the cleaning up and restoring of Iraq is still going on.
