It is technically the science and engineering of making intelligent machines. The intelligence part maybe computational or synthetic and the AI machine is required to exhibit intelligent behavior. In other words, its a machine capable of learning and implementing that learning.

Even then it is no match for natural stupidity!!!

Put simply - a machine capable of thinking for itself.
Todays computers come close, but can only solve problems which they are programmed to solve. True AI requires that the machine can respond to situations it has never met and has not been programmed for. That is supposedly the way humans think.
Some robots are starting to be able to learn, which is a part of AI.

a machine or software with the capability of independent thought regardless of the inputs to its system... basically a computer that can think like a person, unrestricted by laws or programing.

A machine is said to possess AI when it can make a decision independently from facts input to it.
