Here is the cover lead: England's shocking decline: The Queen's once-proud subjects lead Europe in illiteracy, unemployment, teen pregnancy, divorce, drug use, obesity, alcoholism, crime and STDs. Bloody hell!

The education system in this country has never been so good. The days of leaky roofs and mobile classrooms are long gone. I think some of the Tribalist Tory/Bnp voters have very short memories. They cant remember longer than 10 years ago. Mick

You know Bob all the tribal followers of New Labour have been aware of this since Labour got into power and the education system was slanted to provide education to masses coming into the country that had not paid a bean for the privilege. Most could and can't speak English and of course with a free education for all it is an expensive proposition to provide education for those that will contribute nothing but take everything on offer, meanwhile New Labour and Now the Gay Cons are doing ever thing they can to make sure the bright Native Britain child will not get the education he or she is more than entitled to. Those tribalists that support the abhorrent New Labour, never mention these facts when arguing there point.

I completely agree. What a shame. I must admit it has got worse in the last 10 years too. I don't think its down to left of right wing politics, this could have happened under a Tory Government, it just boils down to the fact that the current government may have kept the economy afloat with smoke and mirrors, everything else has gone down the pan, including standards. They have pretty much failed as a Government and the majority know it. But its not only this Government, its other countries too, its society as a general rule. Because we have a poor socialist system who would rather we all be friends and forgive and forget rather than say, you made a mistake - you pay for it. It will only get worst.
People have asked what can be done to make standards better, but people only revert to the past. What we need is a forward thinking politician who is willing to make some unpopular important decisions, not like Blair or Cameron, who will play follow my leader and go along with anything.
Lets hope Brown pulls something out of the bag. But then again, we live in hope. Decent standards can cross party politics.

Yes I do agree and it all started off in the 80s. The house price boom means that for most young people they will never have a place of their own.

The large amount of immigration has meant that there is not so much a skills shortage but a salary shortage for many skilled jobs. The effect of this is many skilled people (including me soon) are leaving the country or they are taking jobs with better money but add less value.

The downgrading of education, training workers, rather than actually educating has resulted in an uninformed and disaffected youth.

The whole celebrity culture thing is a symptom not the disease and so is the heavy drinking and casual sex. Anything to medicate that hopeless feeling.

I think it is probably true and often teachers who are trying to sort the matter out are constrained by
1. Time
2. Needless form filling see 1 above

many schools ask for volunteers to help with this in say the infants. It is not easy for them because they have to prove themselves before the staff will accept them Many volunteers feel excluded because of a lack of information of things which will affect them ie. other activities

Under the present government, it is always best to trust the views of the onlooker. Let's face it, they have no axe to grind and what they say is true anyway.

It failed to mention all the positives then! Not surprising as it is a magazine with a right wing political slant.

You need to read more than one article.

Correct in every sense you only have to look at this site to see the state this country is in with morons unable to spell or even understand basic English this is what Blair has reduced this country to and Brown will continue this until we are as dumb as the Americans.

I agree. It has been ten years of lies and no substance whatsoever. The country is in a state, and do not expect the tories to be any better. It's time for a change to our present system
