It is your surname. In American children almost always use their father's surname as their own surname. We are called by our first name, also called given name or Christian name.

Last name is also called Surname or title. technically it means the one name used by your father, grand father, great grandfather and other forefathers. e.g. Amit Sharma s/o Ramesh Chandra Sharma
These days however last names can change. Some people adopt titles like "rai" as from RAi Sahib or "Ulfat" as in Shruti Ulfat.
Or even some people use the surname of thier mother...of which Mallika Sherawat is a classic example. Lamba being her original title.
South Indians use a different style, they have their first name , father's name and name of their village.
Incase of women, most change thier last name to their husband's last name eg. Manju Gupta (nee agarwal) w/o K.C. Gupta, after marriage. Some ladies prefer to keep thier maiden name and add thier husband's last name as in Arti Verma Mahadevan, after marriage

your last name is the name that comes last in the string of names you've been given.
It actually has no other value than that.. in some countries you don't necessarily receive some sort of family name.
