Interesting legal point. The question asks 'if it were compulsory to join against the enemy of this country', which indicates joining the Armed Forces. However, all UK nationals are under an implicit legal obligation to act, if not in favour of the country to which they owe allegiance, then at least not directly against its interests. That means that all UK nationals have a theoretical duty to act against enemies of the state. To aid and abet them would fall into the category of treason, while to do nothing would risk legal sanction for failure to prevent acts by an enemy of the state. While this would almost certainly be impossible to enforce in legal terms, it still means that all UK citizens are under legal obligation to join in the fight against enemies of the state.

Also, joining the Armed Forces isn't the only way in which people can serve their country. During and after the Second World War, National Service meant ANY state-directed service, including service in the Armed Forces, industry, transport, the civil service, healthcare, etc. People were conscripted for such organisations as the Women's Land Army, the civil service, the mines, the merchant Navy, etc. While not directly serving 'against' the enemy, this service would still count as part of the national effort. So don't assume that in a national emergency, the Armed Forces would be the only organisation in which you could serve.

War is an ugly thing but not the ugliest of things; the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feelings which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.
~ John Stuart Mill

Judging by some of the answers here, we'd lose without HEAVY military support from the US and the Commonwealth. France & Germany? Only if it suited them; both stabbed us in the back in the Falklands, and France supplied Saddam with SAMs in 2003, as found by Polish Special Forces.

I don't think the people in this country would do anything, they would just stay put & moan about how war is wrong, even get killed by the enemy, since most people including the government love everyone who hates us. Also a lot of the population would be on the enemies side. Me personally, I am not like them, but I would hide cos I don't want to be bullet fodder.

I would be fighting for Britain 100% the best way that I could Next to my Patriot Brothers
however if they Americans where envovled then slightly behind or next to them out of gun range but never in front of them.

would use the French as spotters. once we see them running we would know they had eyeballed the enemy.

ps when fighting for your country it dosent matter who the goverment is. you will be fighting for your freedom and Britain not the loony left that we have now.goverments come and go quickly.
invaders need to be forced out at all costs.
if the population of Britain is called up to fight then you would have to assume that it would be a serious war not a foney one like ~Irak

if it was a genuine threat not the fake war on terror ( another false flag )and i was called up i would do my bit , but to volunteer for the army is not comendable its just retarded .

todays wars are not to protect our nation they are to try and control places that are not , places that have refused to become part of the global elites new world order they are wars for world domination . these are the people that own the world banks , oil companys , weapons contractors , pretty much every corporation that has a monopoly ,they own our governments at the very top and create policy , they see the average person as cattle and feel we need to be used , hurded and culled as such .

we will live through extroardinary times in years not decades.

This all depends on who the enemy was and why we were at war. If I didn't agree with the war on moral grounds then I would refuse to fight and take any consequences. However if I agreed with the reasons for fighting and had to join, I would not only fight but would also volunteer for the unit I thought I'd be most effective in - regardless of casualty rates. If my life could save others I would sacrifice it.

Definately, once your friends and family start getting killed, it acts as good motivation.

I think its good for the country to unite behind one goal every so often, the Olympics, a war, whatever. It all costs loads of tax payers money, and mainly affects London!!

With this current government....

I'd leave the country!

Blair has proven he's full of it. So no, I wont die for a lie perhaps if it were another leader with at least an ounce of honesty or decency but with this lot. Personally I would expect a purer response from Joseph Stalin or Adolf Hitler. At least they don't pretend not to be self serving.

Also chances are the Americans would be helping and gun down half of our and their own forces in the meantime. And we would be poorly equipped entering the war zone with cardboard armor so no thanks.
