when were guns invented?

As Sanath said, Guns were made in the 14th Century in China. The 14th century was in the Middle Ages. The Middle Ages spanned from the 5th century A.D. to the end of the 15th century A.D.

Firearms (guns) were originally invented in China in the 14th century A.D. during the Middle Ages.

There are (disputed) claims that cannon were used at the Battle of Crécy in 1346, they were certainly appearing in Europe by that time, coming from the east. Roger Bacon wrote about gunpowder almost 100 years before that in 1248. Both obviously centuries before Shakespeare.

Actually gunpowder was invented some hundreds of years earlier than some of these folks are crediting. Probably around 600 AD.

For the first couple of hundred years its use was limited to firecrackers, smokepots and rockets. Probably around 900-1000 AD the first primitive firearms, made from silk reinforced bamboo came into use. Mongols used smokepots to confuse and frighten their opponents in the late 1200's. there is an account of a Polish-Luthuanian army being routed in the 1250's with the aid of smokepots shaped like monster heads mounted the end of poles.

The first known use of cannon on a European battlefield was at the Battle of Crecy in 1346.

A Cannon is not a gun, its a cannon. I'm sure most of you can read into the question here a realize that the asker is not referring to cannons or rockets.

The copper percussion cap that is in dispute had nothing to do with the invention of the gun either however, The copper percussion cap is not definitely alluded to in the patent records till 1823, but appears to have been invented about 1814-1816

The answer to your question would be :

Hand guns were known in Italy in 1397, and in England they appear to have been used as early as 1375. The fact is we can narrow it down but we cant give exact dates. There were no guns before 1350.

I hope this helps !

The first firearms came from the same country where 'black' gunpowder was first discovered, in China, in the 12th century. The oldest surviving firearm was discovered in a cave in Manchuria, as described in the article below.

Here is a timeline for you:
1232: The Chinese who invented gunpowder (black powder) first used it in a weapon - gunpowder filled tubes aka rockets.
1364: First recorded use of a firearm - shooter lit wicks by hand that ingnited gunpowder that was loaded into the gun barrel.
1400s: Matchlock guns - first mechanically firing of guns. Wicks were now attached to a clamp that sprang into gunpowder that was placed in a "flash pan".
1509: Wheel lock guns - wicks were replaced the wheel lock that generated a spark for igniting the gunpowder.
1630: Flintlock guns - the flintlock did two things mechanically, it opened the lid of the flash pan and provided an igniting spark.
1825: Percussion-cap guns invented by Reverend John Forsyth - firing mechanism no longer uses flash pan, a tube lead straight into the gun barrel, the tupe had an exposive cap on it that exploded when struck

the exact origin is disputed, but it is known that its invention in Europe in the 1400's (not 14th century) had a great change on the world starting about 1500. The technology spread from 1500 on impacted countries domination strategies drastically (ie. soldiers with guns dominated over others without)
