depends on what you're using it for. Sony is good, but cannon can be more user friendly. whatever you do- NO KODAK EASYSHARES!!!!!!!!

If you expand on what you are going to be using it for, you'll probably get better advice. :)

Both mfr are good. The one issue I have with Sonys is locking you in to their memory stick. Most other mrf use standard memory chips. But if you really love the Sony, it's a small issue.

I would go to a store and try out the different models and see which one you like. And don't be fooled by the megapixel hype. A good 6mp camera will usually take just as good photos as most 10mp. Just check the features you want.

Great features:
Image stabilization (not just fast shutter)
Face recognition (helps exposure and focus)

Check this site to compare the models side by side http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sidebyside.asp and the web site in general for good, honest reviews.

You should give more details about your intentions, price range and so on. Would you like a compact camera or SLR?

compact: fit for travel, carry around in your pocket, take casual photos, so-so quality, not good for editing

SLR: mid-range to professional, best quality, bulky, lots of accessoris, for artists/professionals

If you want a compact, go with Sony.

For a SLR go with Canon.
