What do you think of the Gift of the tongues?
Acts 2
The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost
1When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
1 cor. 13:1
"If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels"

There is differant kinds of tongues also.

and.....Mark 16:17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

1 cor.14
1Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy. 2For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit. 3But everyone who prophesies speaks to men for their strengthening, encouragement and comfort. 4He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. 5I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues,[d] unless he interprets, so that the church may be edified

Honestly... yes.

Now, I personally don't consider myself a Christian but Christianity is where I got my spiritual foundation. I know that it is possible to speak in tongues because my mother does. It is uncanny to hear her sing and praise the Almighty Creator in tongues. It is so beautiful to hear and I only catch small bits before she finds out I'm listening. I wish she would let us listen more often. She does make it a point though to worship in private. She, and I as well, believe that worship is something someone does privately. To truly devote oneself to the act.

I will say that (in most cases) the people in church standing up at the alter screaming and blurbing a bunch of nonsense do so for recognition. Also, if you speak in tongues there will be some sort of meaning to it. Like, for example, during a rebellious stage of mine, my mother was singing and I was being *rude* and decided to record her. I actually had the tape translated and sure enough it was a message in Gaelic to me about my life and where I was headed. It really humbled me.

I never told her what I did, all she knows is that I had a complete change in heart and my rebellious stage ended. Sorry about the long winded post. The main thing I want to get across is that yes, people can speak in tongues and people do. It cannot be forced and it must truly come from the heart. I just wish most people wouldn't try it just to fit in.

Since the time that I was a boy, I had attended churches where the filling of the Holy Spirit allowed others to have not only the gift of prophesy, but also the blessings of speaking in tongues. To differentiate between whether or not it is of the Holy Spirit or a demon, the individual will speak in prose like patterns. An intrepreter is usually made available through the Holy Spirit to receive an intrepretation of the message spoken. If it is of a demon, the pattern will be broken, there will be no intrepreter "chosen", and physical traits will not be peaceful or display contentfulness.

I haven't been lead to speak of such in a long time, but I do believe in their purpose of edifying a person and offering a specific message to a specific body of people. This is why the Scripture says, "Let there be an interpreter (Spiritually led, not just someone who happens to know the language) present." I think this gift was intended to show a physical move of God in a spiritual medium since God doesn't walk among us as a man anymore, but in each of us! This is His highest form of communication with us and we'd better give ear to Him when he speaks in this manner.

this is very tricky. There are a lot of tongue speakers who make no sense and there is nobody to translate a message. Or the message is of no value. Sometimes the tongue speaking is a bit of showbuisness. It's like the Pharisees praying in public where everyone can see them and think they are holy. This is a foolish waste of time and tends to alienate new Christians. God gave you a brain to distinguish foolishness from wisdom. If the tongue speaking is done in an atmosphere of condeming those who don't speak in tongues, turn away and get out of there fast. Spiritual destruction is at hand.

Hi, I guess that you can see by the name I choose to call myself on here that I believe in a spirit filled walk. That it is for today, for each and everyone that would have it, in Jesus.

I do have a private prayer language, and have heard and interpreted in the church.
The anointing is so strong as we stand in His presence, that I don't think humans could have a natural tongue for it. Only by the spirit could we cry out for our Lord.

I am glad that you brought out the different kinds of tongues as many think there are only one kind.

be blessed in Jesus~vicki

I believe that it is a language between God and that person. Not encouraged in the church. God understand even my thoughts. I do not need tongues to "feel" special way toward God.

Tongue can refer to either a language or the people the language represents. God mixed up the languages of the ancient people when they planned to use their common language to unit in rebellion against Him at Babel. On the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit gave Christians the ability to speak other languages, allowing everyone that day to hear about God in their own tongue.

I just read a couple of verses about that a couple of night ago. I wish I had my notes on hand, but yes I do believe it is possible and it is something that man cannot teach how to do. This is something that the Holy Spirit gives to you. It is basically a comunication between God, and humans that only God can really truly understand

There is a verse somewhere to that says he tha speaks in an unknown tongue speaks not t o men but to God . His sprit prays but his understanding is unfruitful. So it would appear tha persons spirit is in communion with God even though he may not know how to pray.

I'm not sure, really. I think it's something that God gives to his chosen people so that they may teach others and share their knowledge of God with them. Usually, these people are the ones that do things according God's will.
