well, a person must save themselves ultimately. You should focus on being the change you wish to see in the world. To never look down on someone unless you are helping them up.

You can only save those who want to be saved. It is very noble to help others who are in need but one cannot allow themselves to become so engrossed in helping others that they forget about helping themselves. Therefore any life dedicated solely to spiritual path or solely to helping others is damaging. In one sense you lose sight of others, in the other you lose sight of yourself. And it is very possible to have a spiritual path and help others. I believe that life is all about finding a balance between the extremes. If you go too far in one direction or the other it becomes destructive or counter-productive. However if you are able to find a balance between them you will find that there the two extremes become harmonized and life is so much the better for it.

Selfishness, Self-Centeredness, that we think is the root of all of our problems. By working the a 12-step program, and staying sober, we learn that as alcoholics, we have a soul sickness, we are spiritually bankrupt. Once the spiritual condition is cured, (a spiritual awakening) the mental, emotional and physical will follow.
Our only purpose is to stay sober and to help the alcoholic who still suffers.
I am only granted a dailey reprieve from my alcoholism, contingint on my spiritual condition and my conscious contact with a higher power of my own understanding.
To answer your question, neither is more important then then other.

I think it would be difficult to be on a spiritual path and not help others and it would be as equally difficult to be found helping others and not be on a spiritual path. If you have ever helped anyone out, surely the feeling inside tells you it is a right thing to do.

You can't save an alcoholic from destroying himself or herself, they must want to save themselves. but you can be there and offer help such as AA or rehab or whatever. And a spiritually dedicated life would not be exclusionary if one wanted to do both. Interesting question, which one do you think is more important???
