To open a pdf file you should have Adobe Acrobat Reader on your system installed. In Adobe Acrobat Professional you can edit but it will be difficult to get it. Any OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software Like Abby fine reader or Omni Page you can convert pdf to doc & edit.

To make changes to a PDF you need 2 things. One is a PDF editor. The other is permissions in the PDF file itself. If the file is locked, you will won't be able to change it. To check the security, open the PDF file and check it's security settings.

The most common editor is Adobe Acrobat. But there are now other companies that product good editors. They might not have all the features, but they might need enough for the price. Check CutePDF Pro http://www.cutepdf.com/products/cutepdf/Pro.asp to see what it can do at a fraction of the cost.

By the way, if you are a student (even adult student), you can get Adobe Acrobat as part of the Adobe bundle via you local college bookstore at about 20% the list cost.

Bottom line, I use Adobe Acrobat and love it, but there are less expensive alternatives.

They want you to buy their high priced product that lets you do that. But you can read it in or paste it and make changes. The format changes though.
