I'm by no means an expert, and I don't know how tall you are, but 120 pounds hardly seems to be overweight to me. But if you want to get into shape, swimming, walking/jogging, and eating right and sensibly.

Eat lots of fruits and vegetables, don't eat at night especially right before you go to bed etc...

Stay away from junk foods. I find it's not the amount you eat, but rather what you eat that makes the difference. You can eat your fill of the healthy things.

Also, try not to overdo things, it's not healthy to lose alot of weight all at once especially for someone I wouldn't judge as being overweight in the first place.

Hi there,
contrary to popular belief swimming is not all that great for losing weight.
It is one of the best exercises for fitness, but because it is not a weight bearing exercise its not very effective in weight loss.

Things like walking and running, even if its during a soccer game, or netball are the best things for 13 year olds - young teens in general. even you walk / jog / walk / jog for 30 -40 minutes every second day you will see remarkable results. You're still young, dont worry too much about it just yet.

Unless you're morbidly obese (which you're not) i dont think diet should play a part in a childs weight loss routine. having said that, there are ways you can MODIFY your diet. Talk to your parents about that one though. instead of having a packet of chips, have a piece of fruit etc.

Good luck :)

find daily calorie intake calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours - it optimizes your metabolism)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have protein (lean meat, legumes etc) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min (ideally 45min because the first 20-30min body burns carbs and only then starts burning fat), light weight training (more muscle=faster metabolism)
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, pasta etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)
