I am curious what others think of this tipping etiqutte question. I work for tips and have no problem offering to anybody that I make less than minimum wage. However, I have often found myself in restuarants and thinking to myself, I wonder how much the waiter/tress makes an hour.(I have never actually asked someone) Not that it would make a big difference in the tip, but it just seems like anybody who expects a tip as part of their job should be willing to reveal their wage.

It depends a lot on the person. Me personally, I have no problem telling people I make $5.25 an hour. If they ask then why not tell? I don't get tips, though, I just don't get paid very much :p. i don't really see why people don't like talking about how much they make. I can see how it would be bragging if I 1. actually made a decent wage and 2. Randomly told people how much I make. But if they ask, then it's their problem if they are jealous or whatever...

That's just my opinion.

It's never polite to ask anyone you don't know well how much they make.
Furthermore, their salary shouldn't effect your tip. THEY took the job, so it suits them in some way, at least. Also, good waiters usually get better tips; they pay less tax than the average factory worker, also . 9% usually of sales, and tips average above that if you are a good server.

Not only do I think it's wholly inappropriate for you to ask what someone else makes, I think it's equally inappropriate for you to volunteer what YOU make. If you're providing a service that customarily gets tips, you have to suffer the fact that some people are generous and some people are cheap, not try to lobby them to be generous by telling them how bad off you are.

I think that is terribly rude. It is rude to ask any person what their income is.

I know your logic. You think that if a restaurant employee is making a pittance and is expected to make up the difference between what they earn and the minimum wage, you would be more inclined to tip more liberally. Noble gesture -- it is still rude whatever your logic.

I don't think it's appropriate to ask anyone about his wages. Certain professions are well known to be low-paying, and that's why tips are the norm. It would be highly offensive to adjust your tip amount according to how much the person makes.

It depends on where you live. Anywhere from minimum wage to around $10 in a large city.

No, because do you run around broadcasting how much money you make?

Discussing wages at ANY level is tacky and inappropriate, IMO.

Um, no, its not polite to ask anyone what they make. If they tell you on their own accord, thats one thing, but to ask is very rude. Its really not you business.
