Does the Book of mormon reference these or is it more like just a religious ritual type thing that isn't directly reference in the book?

btw-i know some mormons don't like public discussions about the garments, but I'm just curious--i hope i haven't offended anyone.

love yahoo: thanks for the link

so basically, there are references to various sacred garments in the book, and the temple garments are a kind of symbolism of those in a way? (sorry if i'm misunderstanding, but i'm trying)

Garments...yes, they are sacred to us so we don't talk about them a lot. But as a tangible symbol, they do come up so it's not strange that you're asking.

I have always explained that my garments are a symbol of a covenant that I made with God. They help me to remember to be modest in dress and actions (modest, I belive means not covering every part of me up, but not using extreme styles and being "conservative" in dress). It is an outward demonstration of an inward committment...

A lot of different religions have some form of clothing that they use for religious purposes:
-Jews put tassels on their cloaks and wear yarmulkes on their heads
-Muslims wear "hijab"
-Zoroastrians also have sacred underclothes
-Buddhist monks wear robes of a saffron colour, the colour being sacred

I feel that by wearing a garment under my clothes, it's a more personal committment. I don't have to share that information with anyone. As well, I wear it all the time. In this way I am able to remember my covenants all the time, not just when I am sitting in a chapel.

I hope that this wasn't too cryptic and I hope that it helped.

I've never come across a reference to temple garments within the Book of Mormon.

After going through the temple and making covenants with God (something which you can only usually do after you turn 18), many Mormons (not all) opt to wear garments as a reminder of the covenants they made and a reminder of God and Christ. It also helps them remember to dress modestly, because the top part of the garment covers the stomach and the bottom part goes down to just above the knees. They are usually just white and plain. There is nothing "magical" or "protective" about them, it is just for them to remind themselves of their religion, Christ, and their covenants.

The garments are worn by those that have qualified their lives for service in the temples. They are a symbolic protection from evil and a covering for our nakedness. When Adam and Eve were cast out of the Garden of Eden, they were given coats of skins to cover their nakedness. Our garments represent those coats of skins as well as being a protection and a shield against evil. They are worn under our outerwear in order to protect them from public scrutiny, because they are sacred to us. They are there to remind us of the temple covenants we have made with God to remember Him, obey Him, dedicate ourselves to Him and become like Him. In return He sends us spiritual protection and guidance as a member of His family.

Isold is right, you'll have better luck finding references to them in the Bible:

I'll just add to her list Exodus 40:

"13 And thou shalt put upon Aaron the holy garments, and anoint him, and sanctify him; that he may minister unto me in the priest’s office.
14 And thou shalt bring his sons, and clothe them with coats:"

I think even many members are surprised when they realize just how much of what we hold sacred, and don't talk about outside the temple, is right there in plain sight in the text of the Old Testament.

Its a freemason ritual, the mormons forget that their own scriptures and christians scriptures talk about putting on the full armor of God, ephesians 6:10-18. This garment keeps them modest and they thik is bullet proof, kind of like superman, LOL

I don't think garments are referenced in the book of Mormon.

You are more likely to find references in the Bible. Which leads to the question of why churches have lost this principle.

Genesis 3:21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.

Revelations 19:14 And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.

Ezekiel 42:14 When the priests enter therein, then shall they not go out of the holy place into the utter court, but there they shall lay their garments wherein they minister; for they are holy; and shall put on other garments, and shall approach to those things which are for the people.

Ecclesiates 9:8 Let thy garments be always white; and let thy head lack no ointment.

Isaiah 61:9 And their seed shall be known among the Gentiles, and their offspring among the people: all that see them shall acknowledge them, that they are the seed which the LORD hath blessed.
10 I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.

Revelations 3:4 Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy.
5 He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.

No. personally I think the church is just trying to make some $
I think the Mormons have to wear them before entering the "Holy Temple"(as they call it) so if you want to be a good Mormon you better buy your garments.
