Joules don't equal watts--one's a measurement of energy, one's a mesurement of power.
1 Watt = 1 Joule / 1 sec
Essentially, watts are how many joules you consume in a second.

People are just dabbling in semantics here with their answers. Power? Energy?
No offense but it's all energy. A Joule is a unit of energy and a watt is simply a timed unit per second. So for instance 5 joules a second would be 5 watts.
After all the semantics what you are really talking about is energy.
You should go actually get your information of proper sites than ask the people here. They clearly don't know what they are talking about.
What does it all meant. Well instead of saying that light bulb needs 40 joules a second they say is is a 40 watt light bulb.
So then they can time things on the timed unit also, so after one hour the light bulb being one would be described as using 40 watt hours. So all up 144000 joules of energy where used or 144000 watt-seconds.

A joule is a measurement of energy (or work).
A watt is a measurement of power.
Power is essentially the rate at which energy is consumed (or produced). The Power utility charges for energy not power.
1 joule is a watt second
which also means that a watt is a joule per second.
The power utility charges for kilowatt hours.
A Kilowatt hour is the same as 3600 kilowatt seconds or
3600000 watt seconds. That is 3600000 joules.

3600 joules = 1 watt minute
216000 joules = 1 Wh
when most people say "1 watt" they mean 1 Wh (watt hour)

Watt is a unit of measurement of electrical power where as Joule is a unit of measurement mechanical (heat) energy. However, the equivalency can be stated as 1Joule/sec = 1 Watt.
