Well, I'll answer this, despite the fact that the wording of the question makes me wince...a *man* wouldn't have a 'sex change', neither would a woman; only transsexual people do that.
I'm a transsexual lesbian; which means I was born transsexual (not 'a man') and had a 'sex change' which is the only effective treatment for that condition.
As soon as I was old enough to have sexual feelings, I was attracted to women, not men, which means I was also born lesbian.
Strange as it may seem, 'having sex with men' is NOT why transwomen have surgery (although it's a bonus, for straight transwomen ;)); in fact, if your gender specialist asks you why you want surgery, and you give that as an answer, you'll be shown the door.
Transsexualism (Benjamin's syndrome) is not directly connected to sexual orientation; current research shows that about 40% of transsexual women are lesbian (attracted to other women), and 40% are straight (attracted to men). The remaining 20% are either bisexual, asexual, or refused to answer.
There's a link below that explains this in more detail; it's worth looking around the rest of the website too.
(For 'Blue Dal'; a transsexual woman who is attracted to men isn't gay, she's straight)

You don't choose your orientation. and there can be underlying facts like the residual effects of the hormones you take in transition. Sometimes, they provide some surprises.
I know some transmen who were straight and discovered they were gay when they transtitioned..they liked men. I also know lesbians who transitioned and found themselves attracted to gay men in the process. The same holds true for the transwomen.
And the bottom line is we transition to phsyically become the gender we are inside...to free our true gender from the trap of the body in which it resides. We do not transition to fit into a particular orientation.
Most of usl start our transition out with the premise we will likely be attracted to the opposite sex. Some lucky ones know how their orientation will evolve, others don't. I don't think it's a matter of changing orientation, but more likely that the hormones and the transition takes the pressure off trying to be someone or something you are not and your inherent orienation comes through.
And, believe me, sometimes it is a surprise. When we talk about fluidity of gender and orientation, it is more evident in the transsexual community during and after transition. There are just so many variables...and variations.

As somebody who is male to female I can only answer by my personel experience.I never was very attracted to women as a young person but because of society I gave it a try and was always honest as I could be with my girlfriends as to my gender issue. As I got older I started acting on my attractions to men and had a five year relationship with one and we broke up because of my wanting to transition to full time with grs.I have been on hormones for 1 1/2 years now and I'm finding myself becoming more attracted to women.I don't know if it's the hormones or having to deal with men from a female perspective thats doing it to me or a combination of both.Either way my inner self has always felt female.

This is an excellent question, one my parents have even asked me. I never was a man, I was born male though. Identity is really complicated. I know I'm a woman and I need my body to reflect that. It was torture to live in a body I felt didn't belong to me. Likewise, I don't control my sexual orientation, I only control how I express it. So, I'm becoming female and I'm mostly attracted to women (So I guess maybe I'm a bisexual lesbian? lol ).

You are getting caught up in one of the classic, and very wrong, stereotypes about transsexuals. This stereotype is that the real motivation for "changing sexes" is sex. People transition, that is have gender reassignment surgery, to bring their body in alignment with their mind to correct a birth defect. The sexuality of a person is completely separate from their gender identity. Regarding what the Bible says about homosexuality and transsexuality, spend some time reading the links that Diane gives.

Hmmm.... You are actually talking about two different things:
1) What sex a person feels they should be, and
2) What sex the person is attracted to.
A sex change is only needed if the person thinks they are the wrong sex (#1 above).
Who they are attracted to (#2 above) has nothing to do with the sex change. They will be attracted to the same sex after the surgery as they were before the surgery.

Could that have been me babe. Because when I was young I always wanted to be female. I got smacked about by my father then sexually abused my stepfather. After I had my surgery I was sexually assaulted once and raped twice so I no longer trust men at all and am always very nervous around them. I became lesbian because basically I only trust women and find them so much nicer and gentle and will never rape you. I think it could only be me because I have said it so many times on here. Now I am crying because it brought all the memories back.

Because we don't identify as straight men. We don't want to be in a straight relationship. We don't want to play the man dating a woman. We don't want to "do the deed" like that. That is not how we identify. We identify as women that love women. It's simple as that.

It's about how you feel inside. If she feels she IS a woman, then she relates to women AS a woman, and therefore is a lesbian.

I don't think they intend to become lesbians. They probably remain attracted to men (if they're gay, I guess, I'm not really sure if all transgendered people are gay)
